Twenty-one years later, Qazi Touqeer walked into the Bigg Boss 20 house as the season’s third contestant and sang for Salman Khan on stage.

That tension defined his run: audiences kept him in, reviewers kept doubting him.
The significance went well beyond the show. The President of India described him as the hero of Kashmir. The BBC later reported that his success triggered a wave of Kashmiri youngsters turning up for Indian Idol auditions held in Srinagar, an effect documented in academic writing on the Valley as well. For a region that had almost no presence in mainstream Indian entertainment at the time, a Srinagar boy winning the country’s biggest music show was a genuine cultural event.
The Arijit Singh connection
Arijit Singh, now among India’s most successful playback singers, competed in the same season. He did not win, and Qazi did.
The framing running through this week’s coverage, that Qazi “beat” Arijit, is misleading. Fame Gurukul ran on rolling public eliminations across a large field, not a head-to-head final between the two. Arijit exited earlier in the run, with reports differing on exactly where he placed. The two have stayed friendly across two decades, and in 2026 Qazi posted a video from a reunion with Arijit in Jiaganj, looking back at their days on the show.
Music after the show
The immediate follow-up was Yeh Pal, the album he released with Ruprekha Banerjee under Sony BMG at the end of 2005, with its title track becoming his best-known song. He also recorded singles including “Karu Kya”, “Hero”, “Meri Mehbooba” and “Madham Si Chandani”.
What did not follow was the conventional Bollywood playback career that a win of that size would suggest. Acting, and the film that never came out
He was cast in Take Off, intended as his acting debut. While rehearsing for it at Ganesh Acharya’s studio he fell and injured his neck, and was hospitalised. The film was never released.
He appeared as himself in Sarkaar Ki Duniya in 2009. His most widely seen screen moment came in 2015, when he featured on camera in the “Afghan Jalebi (Ya Baba)” sequence from Kabir Khan’s Phantom, sharing the frame with Katrina Kaif. One point worth being clear about, since coverage often blurs it: he appeared in the video, but did not sing the track. It was sung by Pakistani singer Syed Asrar Shah, composed by Pritam and written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. He has since released his own cover versions of the song.

Why this matters: the “beat Arijit Singh” line is doing most of the work in this week’s headlines, and it is the least accurate thing being written about him.
