Robert Downey Jr. spent eleven years as the face of Marvel, then left Tony Stark behind in 2019 when the character snapped his fingers and sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame. On December 18, 2026 he returns behind a different kind of mask. “Same mask, new task,” Downey told the Comic-Con crowd in 2024, when Marvel revealed that he would play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
The twist suits a career built on them. Downey was a Brat Pack teenager, an Oscar-nominated Charlie Chaplin in his twenties, and then an actor Hollywood insurers considered too risky to hire, before he became the highest-paid actor in the world from 2013 to 2015. This profile follows that arc, from a five-year-old playing a puppy in his father’s film to a Doom costume he helped shape.
Who Is Robert Downey Jr.?
Robert Downey Jr. is an American actor and producer, born in Manhattan on April 4, 1965, who became a global star as Tony Stark in ten Marvel Cinematic Universe films, from Iron Man (2008) to Avengers: Endgame (2019). His films as a leading actor have grossed over $14.3 billion worldwide, according to The Numbers as cited by Wikipedia. He has won an Academy Award, three Golden Globes, two BAFTAs and a Daytime Emmy, and has two Primetime Emmy nominations.
What stands out is the range, not only the size. The same career includes Sherlock Holmes, an HBO miniseries in which he played five roles, a Broadway debut, and Team Downey, the production company he runs with his wife.
Early Life and Family Background
Downey was born into film. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was an underground filmmaker, and his mother, Elsie Ann Ford, was an actress who appeared in his films. He has an older sister, Allyson. Because of his father’s projects, the family moved often, with stops that included Woodstock, London, New Mexico, California and Greenwich Village.
He made his acting debut at five, playing a sick puppy in his father’s absurdist comedy Pound (1970), and appeared in another of his father’s films, Greaser’s Palace, at seven. His parents divorced when he was twelve. He attended Santa Monica High School for two years, then dropped out in 1982 to act full time, supporting himself with jobs that included clearing tables and working in a shoe store between auditions. Downey has spoken openly about growing up around addiction in his family, a thread that runs through the rest of his story.
Career: From the Brat Pack to a Second Act
The Brat Pack years
Downey made his stage debut in 1983, and his first credited film role was in Baby It’s You (1983). The breakthrough came as a bully in John Hughes’s Weird Science (1985). He joined Saturday Night Live in 1985 but was dismissed after one season, then landed his first leading role in The Pick-up Artist (1987). Less than Zero (1987), in which he played a drug-addicted rich boy, brought the first real critical acclaim. Roger Ebert called the performance “so real, so subtle and so observant that it’s scary.”
Chaplin and the long fall
Chaplin (1992) was the high point. Downey learned to play the violin and tennis left-handed to play Charlie Chaplin, and won the BAFTA for Best Actor with Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, although the film itself did poorly at the box office.
The next decade was darker. Downey was arrested in 1996 on drug and weapons possession charges and went through repeated rounds of court-ordered rehab and jail. In 1999 he was sentenced to three years in prison for parole violations, and he was released in 2000 after nearly a year at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility in Corcoran. He joined the cast of Ally McBeal and won a Golden Globe, but was dismissed from the show in 2001 after further arrests. By the time he committed to recovery that year, he was homeless, considered too great an insurance risk to hire, and facing bankruptcy.
The comeback
Downey says he has been drug-free since July 2003. His return to film came with The Singing Detective (2003), which became possible after Mel Gibson paid his insurance bond. On Gothika (2003), producer Joel Silver withheld 40 percent of his salary until production ended as protection. Shane Black then gave him the lead in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), and Downey followed it with Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), A Scanner Darkly (2006) and Zodiac (2007).
Iron Man and the Marvel decade
Director Jon Favreau fought for Downey as Tony Stark, saying he had “found a lot of his own life experience” in the character. Iron Man (2008) earned more than $585 million worldwide, and Downey went on to ten MCU films, including The Avengers (2012), which grossed over $1.52 billion, and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the first superhero film to pass $2 billion. In 2008 he also earned an Oscar nomination for Tropic Thunder, a performance that drew controversy for its use of dark makeup, and in 2009 he won a Golden Globe for Sherlock Holmes, the start of a franchise with director Guy Ritchie.
Oppenheimer, television and Broadway
In Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023), Downey played the antagonistic bureaucrat Lewis Strauss and won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice award for Best Supporting Actor. Wikipedia reports that he took a pay cut for the part, earning $4 million instead of his usual upfront $10 million to $20 million. In 2024 he played five supporting roles in HBO’s The Sympathizer, which earned a Primetime Emmy nomination, and made his Broadway debut as the title character in Ayad Akhtar’s McNeal, which opened on September 30, 2024 at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont Theater.
