Last updated: 3 October 2026

In June 2025, Nushrratt Bharuccha stood on an awards stage and described the roles that first made her famous. In her early films, she said, she was the annoying, controlling girlfriend who got laughed at. She was there to collect an award for a horror film about a mother fighting to save her daughter.

That contrast is the story of her career. For years she was the face of Luv Ranjan’s comedies, from Pyaar Ka Punchnama in 2011 to the 2018 hit Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Dream Girl in 2019. Then came Chhorii (2021), her first film as a solo female lead, and its sequel Chhorii 2 (2025). In July 2026 the sequel earned her Best Actress at the NEXA Indian Streaming Academy Awards.

This week she is in the news for a different reason. On 2 October 2026 her team said she had fractured her spine in an accident in Bali and would undergo surgery in Mumbai. This profile covers her full film career and the latest confirmed update.

Who Is Nushrratt Bharuccha?

Nushrratt Bharuccha is an Indian actress who works mainly in Hindi films. She began on television in 2002, made her film debut in Jai Santoshi Maa (2006) and became a recognisable name through Luv Ranjan’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama films, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety and Dream Girl. Since 2021 she has moved into thrillers and female-led stories with Chhalaang, Ajeeb Daastaans, Chhorii, Janhit Mein Jaari, Akelli and Chhorii 2. She was credited as Nushrat Bharucha until June 2020, when she changed the spelling of her name, reportedly for numerological reasons.

Early Life and Background

Nushrratt Bharuccha was born in Mumbai on 17 May 1985 to Tanvir Bharucha, a businessman, and Tasneem Bharucha, a homemaker. She is their only child. She studied at Jai Hind College in Mumbai and has an interest in writing, mainly poetry.

Acting came early. Her first on-screen job was a minor role as Chiku in the Zee TV series Kittie Party in 2002, years before her first film.

Career

Television and small beginnings (2002 to 2010)

After Kittie Party, Jai Santoshi Maa (2006) gave her a first film credit as Mahima. A music video, Zubeen Garg’s Zindagi Kahin Gum Hai, followed in 2007, then a cameo in Kal Kissne Dekha (2009) and the Telugu film Taj Mahal (2010), in which she was credited as Shruthi. Her last television role was Drishika Kashyap in the Sony series Seven, before cinema took over.

Her first lead role in a Hindi film came in 2010 with Dibakar Banerjee and Ekta Kapoor’s anthology Love Sex Aur Dhokha, where she played Shruti Dhaiya. The film did moderately well and put her in front of a new audience.

The Luv Ranjan years (2011 to 2019)

The real turning point was Pyaar Ka Punchnama (2011), the buddy comedy that paired her with Kartik Aaryan and made her a familiar face to young audiences. She worked with director Luv Ranjan and Aaryan again in Akaash Vani (2013), then in Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 (2015), which was reported to have earned over ₹88 crore worldwide. Her other films in this stretch, including Darr @ the Mall (2014), Meeruthiya Gangsters (2015) and the Tamil film Valeba Raja (2016), did not repeat that success.

The next big shift came in 2018. In Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, she played Sweety, a character who divides a pair of best friends, opposite Kartik Aaryan and Sunny Singh. The film was reported to have earned about ₹150 crore worldwide and entered the 100 Crore Club in India. A year later Dream Girl, with Ayushmann Khurrana, was reported at around ₹200 crore. By then she was one of the more reliable female leads in Hindi comedy, and also one of the most typecast.

The OTT turn (2020 to 2022)

When theatres closed during the pandemic, her choices changed with the market. Chhalaang (2020), with Rajkummar Rao, went straight to Amazon Prime Video and drew mixed reviews. In 2021 she appeared in Ajeeb Daastaans, the Netflix anthology produced by Karan Johar, as Meenal, and earned a Best Actress nomination at the Busan Asian Contents Awards for it.

Chhorii (2021) was the film that changed the question. Directed by Vishal Furia, it is a Hindi remake of his own Marathi horror film Lapachhapi and followed Sakshi, a pregnant woman who takes shelter in a house inside a sugarcane field. It was her first film built entirely around a solo female character, and it was reported as the number one title in India on Prime Video in its release week. The performance won her the Best Actress (Critics) honour at the Iconic Gold Awards and a Filmfare OTT Awards nomination.

In 2022 she balanced the risk with variety. Hurdang, a love triangle with Sunny Kaushal and Vijay Varma, was a box office failure, while the social comedy Janhit Mein Jaari earned praise for a female-led story. Ram Setu, a Diwali release with Akshay Kumar and Jacqueline Fernandez, followed.

2023 to 2025: range and a sequel

In 2023 she appeared in Selfiee with Akshay Kumar, Emraan Hashmi and Diana Penty, had a cameo in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, and starred in Chatrapathi, the Hindi remake of S.S. Rajamouli’s film, which The Economic Times described at the time as her first pan-India film. Akelli, a thriller about an ordinary Indian woman trapped in a combat zone and set in Iraq, took her to the Haifa International Film Festival in Israel.

Chhorii 2 arrived on Amazon Prime Video on 11 April 2025. Sakshi, now fighting a superstitious cult to save her seven-year-old daughter, is the role she has since been honoured for. Soha Ali Khan joined the cast as the antagonist. Later that year, Ufff Yeh Siyapaa (5 September 2025) gave her something very different: a dialogue-free dark comedy directed by G. Ashok and produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg, with Sohum Shah and Nora Fatehi. It reached Netflix on 31 October 2025.

Current Projects and Latest Updates

The Bali accident and surgery

Early on 1 October 2026, reports said Nushrratt Bharuccha had been hospitalised in Bali after an accident. On 2 October her team issued an official statement. It said she had been in Bali on a work-cum-holiday trip, had suffered a fracture in her spine and would undergo spine surgery. The team said she was being brought back to Mumbai by air ambulance for the surgery and that her work commitments over the next few weeks were likely to be affected.

India TV reported that she was airlifted to Mumbai on Friday 2 October. How the accident happened, her condition beyond the statement and the date of the surgery have not been made public, and this profile does not speculate on them.

What comes next

Before the accident, reports in early August said she had joined Remo D’Souza’s untitled action film as one of the leads, with Tiger Shroff, Pashmina Roshan, Abhishek Banerjee and Elvish Yadav. It is the first on-screen pairing of Bharuccha and Shroff, and the first production from Viccky Jain’s new banner VJ Frames. No revised schedule has been reported since her team’s statement.

Her most recent honour came in July 2026, when she won Best Actress (Female) for Chhorii 2 at the NEXA Indian Streaming Academy Awards. She dedicated the award to what she called the chhoriis, the girls who try to make their own way. For an actress who once said she feared being forgotten, it is a pointed place to be.
